For the School of Calligraphy and Ornamentation
Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, the Calligraphy and Ornamentation School in the emirate launched the “Fujairah Art Residency” programme for Arab miniature artists. This is the first of its kind internationally in terms of specialisation and focus, and it targets an elite group of miniature artists from Arab countries.
The programme, launched as part of the school's ongoing efforts to enhance the presence of Islamic arts and preserve Arab visual heritage, ran from 25 October to 15 November 2025. It attracted a select group of Arab artists who underwent a unique educational experience combining theoretical study with intensive practical training, within a specialised learning environment overseen by a panel of leading experts in the field.
The programme aimed to empower artists to develop their technical skills in miniature art, rectify common practices, and provide in-depth knowledge of the diverse historical schools of this ancient art form, within a framework that combines authenticity and contemporary professionalism. The programme also sought to establish a database of qualified Arab artists to carry out professional-level artistic projects in the future, contributing to the support of this artistic specialisation and enhancing its presence both regionally and internationally.
The practical aspect of the programme was overseen by Professor Ruhollah Jahanbin from Iran and Professor Jahangir Ashurov from Uzbekistan, both of whom are prominent names in the field of miniature art within the Islamic world.
The programme comes as part of a comprehensive strategy adopted by the Emirate of Fujairah to consolidate its position as a vital centre for Islamic arts and a leading cultural destination in the region, supporting specialised visual arts through distinguished initiatives that keep pace with the aspirations of Arab artists and provide them with a stimulating environment for creativity, production and excellence.
The residency of miniature artists represents a pivotal step towards restoring the artistic presence of this discipline in the contemporary Arab context, and grants Arab artists a platform for professional expression grounded in knowledge and empowerment.
