Digital Geometric Patterns

Course Description

This practical workshop introduces participants to the timeless principles of Islamic geometry, and provides a comprehensive workflow for translating these designs into the digital realm for physical production. Participants will learn pattern construction through both traditional and digital methods, culminating in the preparation of a file ready for automated manufacturing.

  • Session 1: Introduction to Islamic Geometry + Drawing Simple Patterns
    • Focus: Foundations of Islamic Geometry and the Traditional Method of Constructing Simple Patterns.
  • Session 2: Using AutoCAD
    • Focus: Translating hand-drawn concepts into a digital environment, covering basic AutoCAD commands and workflows for creating precise geometric patterns.
  • Session 3: Setting up the design for a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine
    • Focus: Finalising digital design and preparing files (e.g. ensuring vector accuracy, scaling, and correct file format) for manufacturing using a CNC machine.

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding the fundamental principles and methods of constructing Islamic geometric patterns.
  • Mastering the basic commands within Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software for precise pattern drafting.
  • Learn the necessary steps to convert a digital design into a file ready for automated manufacturing (CNC).

Their artistic projects.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Drawing basic Islamic geometric patterns using traditional tools.
  • Create a professional-quality vector design of a geometric pattern using CAD software.
  • Preparing a file for production on a CNC machine for cutting or engraving.

Required software

Participants will require a laptop with access to AutoCAD.

Trainer

Engineer Mostafa Sedky is a designer and educator specialising in Islamic geometric ornamentation. His work focuses on reviving Islamic artistic heritage and developing it through contemporary design applications.

He has experience in studying traditional geometric patterns and analysing their visual structures. Through his artistic and educational work, he aims to present this art in a simplified and accessible way that helps students and designers understand its principles and apply them in their own artistic projects.
