Introduction to Islamic Geometric Patterns — Annual Programme

Course Description

This annual programme introduces students to the principles and visual logic underpinning Islamic geometric patterns.
Students learn to construct patterns from precise circles, divisions, grids, and intersections using a compass and ruler.

The programme doesn't just copy designs, but focuses on understanding, analysing, and independently recreating the pattern structure.
The student progresses from basic constructions to more complex networks, studying symmetry, repetition, proportion, and rhythm.
Accuracy at intersection points.

Students carry out technical drawings, engineering studies and completed works of art, and prepare selections of them to participate in
End-of-year student exhibition.

Option one: Sunday, 10:30 AM–1:30 PM.

• Use the compass and ruler accurately.
• Understanding networks and fundamental engineering families.
• Pattern analysis and reconstruction in organised steps.
• Identifying and correcting engineering errors.

Learning outcomes

• To build a set of geometric patterns independently.
• Producing accurate, clean, and workable drawings.
• Analysis of the fundamental structure of a standing geometric pattern.
• Completion of a selection of artworks ready for exhibition.

About the teacher

Mustafa Sadqi is a teacher and practising artist specialising in Islamic geometric patterns.
It focuses in its teaching on logic, proportion, and structure, and presents complex constructions in clear, graduated steps.
