As part of the adult workshop series, the School of Calligraphy and Ornamentation in Fujairah hosted artist Marwa Turkistani for a unique, creative experience in the art of glass painting. Marwa Turkistani is a skilled artisan based in Jeddah, born in 1985. She specialised in ceramics and earned her degree in Art and Design from King Abdulaziz University in 2012. Her passion for Islamic art deepened after obtaining a Diploma in Traditional Art from Bayt Jameel in collaboration with The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts in London in 2017.
In 2019, Marwa launched her first home studio to establish a solid foundation for ceramics in her region. Her work expanded with the opening of a second studio on Al-Balad Artisan Street in early 2024, followed by a third studio in Hayy Jameel. She has collaborated on various projects with local restaurants, such as “Mez,” and led workshops with prestigious institutions, including Zone 97, Art Jameel, the Saudi Art Council, and the Islamic Arts Biennale.
The workshop began with an introduction to the art of glass painting and its connection to Islamic ornamentation, followed by a showcase of designs inspired by the rich heritage of Islamic geometric patterns and floral motifs. After selecting the design that best suited their taste, participants transferred the outlines onto glass frames using special tools, with detailed guidance on outlining techniques and maintaining precision.
They then moved on to the coloring stage, learning how to blend colors to bring vibrancy and depth to their work, along with tips from the artist on color distribution and highlighting details. Over the course of a focused and creative hour, the transparent glass pieces were transformed into vivid artworks inspired by Islamic design, each reflecting the individual creativity and personal touch of the participant.
This workshop was part of Marwa Turkistani’s extensive experience in managing and delivering artistic workshops. She has worked with renowned cultural and artistic institutions, offering inspiring educational experiences that combine high craftsmanship with interactive knowledge-sharing—making her one of the prominent names in the contemporary traditional arts and crafts scene.
