Turkish Ornamentation and Gilding Art – First Semester – Online

About the Art of Turkish Ornamentation and Gilding

This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental principles, techniques, and practical applications of traditional Turkish ornamentation art. It emphasises both the historical context and hands-on practice. Students will explore a rich variety of motifs, patterns, and colouring methods that have been passed down through generations over the centuries. Special focus will be given to the intricate and refined Hatayi motifs, the delicate and transparent painting technique known as Halkâr, the rhythmic structure of Rumi and Zer-zanrak designs, and the meticulous drawing methods using fine lines as the foundation for ornamental compositions.

Through lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on studio practice, participants will analyse the cultural symbols and meanings embedded in these traditional forms, while training to apply them using contemporary tools and materials. By studying sources and recreating classical models, students will cultivate a deeper appreciation for this refined art of Turkish ornamentation and gilding.

Throughout the semester, participants will develop their skills in composition, colour harmony, and brush control, providing them with a solid foundation in the principles of design. By the end of the course, they will have acquired the artistic skills, confidence, and insight needed to create original works inspired by this traditional art, expressed in a contemporary and thoughtful style.
