Introduction to Drawing and Painting Nature with Watercolours (January – June)

Learn how to accurately draw and paint elements of nature using watercolour techniques under the guidance of internationally recognised artist Shevaun Doherty.

This course runs over two months and is inspired by the natural world, focusing on the development of realistic drawing and painting techniques. Through the core elements of art—line, tone, shape, colour, texture and composition—you will be guided step by step from initial sketches through to a fully resolved artwork.

You will receive clear, structured instruction in essential drawing and watercolour techniques, alongside personalised guidance to support the development of your own artistic style.

Led by Shevaun Doherty, an experienced artist who offers demonstrations and individual support, this course is suitable for beginners as well as those wishing to refine their skills within a supportive and focused learning environment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understanding art tools and materials (pencils, brushes, paper and watercolours)
  • Accurate drawing from direct observation
  • Understanding outdoor perspective and creating depth and contrast
  • Studying light and shadow using watercolour
  • Watercolour techniques, including:
    • Wet-on-wet colouring
    • Wet-on-dry colouring
  • Painting on glass
  • Dry brush technique
  • Precise colour mixing
  • Capturing texture and natural detail
  • Developing a consistent sketchbook practice
  • Creating study pages
  • Finishing and presenting artwork to a professional standard
  • Learning how to correct mistakes and manage creative frustration

Certificate

Participants must attend at least 90% of the course hours to receive a certificate of attendance.

Instructor

Shevaun Doherty is an Irish artist specialising in botanical and nature art, and currently serves as President of the Society of Botanical Artists.

An award-winning artist, she has exhibited her work both within Ireland and internationally, including at the National Gallery of Ireland in 2020. Her work forms part of the Irish national collection and is held at the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork and the Natural History Museum in Dublin.

Shevaun describes herself as a “visual storyteller”, using her artistic practice to raise awareness of environmental conservation.

Her notable work includes:

  • Designing national postage stamp collections featuring flowers and wildlife
  • Producing illustrations for the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan

She continues to deliver workshops and art courses worldwide, combining inspiration with technical excellence.
