This introductory course provides a practical entry into the world of Islamic geometric design, one of the most important visual foundations of Islamic art. Islamic geometric patterns are based on precise systems of balance, repetition, and symmetry, and they have been widely used throughout history in architecture, manuscript decoration, ceramics, woodwork, and other traditional art forms.
During the course, participants will explore how Islamic geometric patterns are constructed using simple shapes such as circles, squares, and triangles. Students will learn the logic behind pattern construction and how complex designs can be developed from basic geometric principles.
The workshop will also introduce the concept of geometric pattern families and explain how different patterns are categorized according to their underlying structures. Participants will learn how to recognise these pattern families and apply them correctly within their artistic work.
Through guided demonstrations and practical exercises, students will practice drawing simple geometric patterns step by step. These exercises will help participants understand the structural logic of Islamic geometric ornament and develop their skills in pattern design.
This course is suitable for beginners, artists, designers, and anyone interested in Islamic art and geometric ornamentation.
By the end of this course, participants will understand the fundamental principles behind Islamic geometric patterns and how they are constructed.
Participants will learn how to draw simple geometric patterns and understand the geometric steps required to create them. They will also learn how to identify different geometric pattern families and understand the characteristics that define each one.
Students will gain the ability to apply geometric patterns correctly in their artwork and design projects, using the principles of symmetry, repetition, and balance found in traditional Islamic geometry.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to draw at least four different Islamic geometric patterns using the techniques learned during the workshop.
Each participant will also create their own artwork based on one of the geometric patterns studied in the course. This final project will demonstrate their understanding of pattern construction and their ability to apply geometric ornament in artistic compositions.
Participants will leave the workshop with practical drawing skills and a deeper appreciation for the mathematical beauty and artistic richness of Islamic geometric design.

Geometric Pattern Course Requirements:
To ensure the best learning experience, each student is required to prepare the following materials:

Engineer Mostafa Sedky is a designer and educator specialising in Islamic geometric ornamentation. His work focuses on reviving Islamic artistic heritage and developing it through contemporary design applications.
He has experience in studying traditional geometric patterns and analysing their visual structures. Through his artistic and educational work, he aims to present this art in a simplified and accessible way that helps students and designers understand its principles and apply them in their own artistic projects.
