Scientific Botanical Illustration

تقام هذه الورشة بالتعاون مع جامعة فاتح سلطان محمد الوقفية في إسطنبول، بإشراف الفنانة ياسمين دمير وتجمع بين الفن والعلم من خلال الرسم النباتي العلمي الذي يوازن بين الدقة العلمية والجماليات البصرية. تقام الورشة على يومين متتاليين، يجب حضور اليومين معاً للحصول على تجربة متكاملة

Day 1 Workshop Observation and Basic Drawing Techniques

Participants will learn the basics of scientific botanical drawing through a brief introduction to the aims of this art, its historical development, and its relationship to science and art. Tools and materials such as paper, pens, inks, and magnifying lenses will then be reviewed. Participants will then move on to practical exercises in observational drawing using live plant specimens, focusing on depicting stems, leaves, veins, and flowers in the correct proportions and highlighting details and texture. At the end of the workshop, the works will be displayed as a group, and the artist will provide individual feedback to the participants.

Day 2 Workshop - Watercolor Detail and Painting

This day builds on the first day's learning, focusing on fine detail and color techniques. Participants will explore plant parts such as leaves and flowers, focusing on the shapes of veins, edges, and overall structure.
Participants will practice light, shadow, and volume techniques to add depth. They will then learn to paint with watercolours using techniques such as glazing, wet-on-wet, and dry brushing to achieve natural gradations and realistic shadows. At the end of the day, each participant will present their final work and receive feedback from the instructor and their peers.

Instructor:

Yasemin Demir is a botanical artist and researcher from Turkey. Born in Ankara, she studied at Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf University in Istanbul, where she specialized in the art of illumination and studied a minor in Arabic calligraphy. She then completed her master's degree in the analysis of botanical drawings in Islamic heritage based on the works of Dioscorides. She began her artistic training in 2006 and received lessons in drawing, illumination, and scientific botanical illustration from a number of prominent Turkish artists.
She has participated in exhibitions and projects both inside and outside Turkey and contributed to the Illustrated Encyclopedia of Turkish Flora project under the auspices of the Presidency. Since 2016, she has taught at various institutions and studios and currently continues to teach scientific botanical illustration at the Turkish Classical Arts Foundation in Istanbul.
