Artist and teacher Samira Mayyan is offering two series of interactive workshops exploring Islamic geometric patterns, using simple tools such as a compass and ruler. Each workshop focuses on a family of designs inspired by distinctive historical sources, with participants progressing step by step from building the foundation to colouring and final details.
Participants can register for one workshop.
Workshop 1 The Eight Variations from the Alcázar of Seville
This workshop focuses on a family of eight variations taken from the historic Alcázar of Seville. Participants will learn the cultural context of these patterns and then begin drawing them step by step using a compass and ruler, outlining them with pencils and adding colour to create a complete design. The workshop aims to understand the historical context of Islamic geometric patterns and explore the eight variations of the Alcázar. It also enables participants to apply precise drawing and colouring techniques. At the end of the workshop, participants will complete a geometric work inspired by the Alcazar, gaining practical skills in construction and painting, as well as experiencing the meditative nature of drawing geometric patterns. Workshop 2 Islamic Geometry
This workshop focuses on the distinctive hexagonal patterns found in Mughal and Persian art. Participants will discover how these motifs are derived from dividing a circle into six equal sections, then constructing geometric grids to draw precise decorative units. The workshop aims to introduce participants to hexagonal patterns in Islamic art and develop additional skills in using the compass and ruler, while enhancing the precision of geometric compositions. By the end, participants will be able to produce a complete hexagonal design, gain a deeper understanding of the diversity of Islamic patterns, and gain greater confidence in applying traditional geometric techniques.
