Golden Touches - Islamic Gilding and Decoration

A fun, hands-on workshop for beginners and art enthusiasts, aimed at introducing the art of Islamic illumination, its historical significance, and its role in manuscripts and architecture. Participants will receive a simplified decorative design, which they will transfer onto their own paper and then color it with appropriate colors under the direct supervision of the instructor. The workshop combines artistic enjoyment and practical application, introducing the basics of illumination and decoration in a simple and interactive manner.

Instructor:

Namariq Ali Mohammed is a Sudanese artist based in the UAE, specializing in book arts and illumination. She obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Sudan University of Science and Technology in 2009, specializing in Arabic and Latin calligraphy. She then moved to Turkey to pursue her postgraduate studies, where she earned a Master's degree in the art of illumination from Sultan Mehmet Al-Fatih University in 2022 under the supervision of Professor Mustafa Çelebi. She is currently pursuing a PhD in traditional arts. She worked in Mustafa Çelebi's studio in Istanbul and had the honour of illuminating works by the world-renowned calligrapher Hassan Çelebi. She also studied the art of miniatures for two years, gave workshops on Islamic architecture, and since 2010 has participated in international exhibitions and events inside and outside Turkey. Today, she is considered one of the most prominent Arab figures in the field of illumination, and through her work, she seeks to deepen understanding of the history and philosophy of this ancient art.
