Emirati artist Haya Obaid Al Ketbi will present two distinctive workshops exploring authentic aspects of Islamic decorative arts. In the first, participants will learn about the tughra art as an Ottoman royal signature that combined the aesthetics of calligraphy and decoration, while the second focuses on decorating the covers of Islamic manuscripts using traditional techniques that blend floral motifs and gilding.
Participants can register for one or both workshops.
Workshop 1 Tughra: Decoration and Gilding
This workshop introduces participants to the tughra art as a style of Ottoman royal signature, exploring its structure, components, and artistic techniques. Participants will practice using decorative and gilding tools to create their own tughras. They will then execute their designs on a pre-printed canvas using gold colors and accompanying motifs.
Date: Monday, October 20
Time: 4-6 PM
Workshop 2 Manuscript Cover Decoration in Islamic Art
This workshop offers a practical experience in designing floral and geometric motifs traditionally used on Islamic manuscript covers. Participants will begin by learning about the parts and components of an Islamic cover, then begin drawing and preparing the basic outline. They will then move on to gilding techniques using colours and gold, culminating in the final finishing touches of the artwork. The workshop aims to develop artistic and creative skills while preserving the authenticity of the classic style.
