Moroccan calligrapher Abdel Samad Mahfad is offering two comprehensive workshops on the art of Diwani calligraphy. Participants can register for one or both workshops.

Workshop 1 Introduction to Diwani Calligraphy

This workshop introduces participants to Diwani calligraphy through a presentation of ancient decrees and images from its developmental stages, with a focus on writing individual letters in detail and using appropriate pens to highlight their fine details. The workshop also includes interactive activities in which trainees participate in writing the letters themselves and studying them with the trainer, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of the origins of this script.

Workshop 2 Tarteesh Techniques in Diwani Script

his workshop builds on what participants began in the first workshop, moving on to executing texts on lined paper using professional tools and traditional Tarteesh techniques. Participants will learn how to work with inks and tools to enhance the aesthetics of letters and give them a complete artistic touch, giving them firsthand experience in producing high-quality calligraphy works.

Trainer

Abdelsamad Mahfad was born in Casablanca in 1987, where he studied until he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree and then pursued university studies in History and Civilization. His interest in Arabic calligraphy began at an early age, influenced by the workbooks of Professor Mohamed Ezzat and the paintings of Professors Sami and Ismail Haqi in the Jali Diwani script. He has won several prestigious awards, including first prize in the IRCICA International Calligraphy Competition in Turkey (2013, 2016, and 2022) and second prize in the Fujairah Competition (2022). He has participated in judging competitions, including the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Centre for Arabic Calligraphy initiative in Saudi Arabia. He is known for his mastery of Diwani and Jali Diwani scripts and his efforts to pass this heritage on to new generations.
