Miniature Art Course: The Depiction of Angels – Aesthetics, Symbolism, and Creative Expression
This course offers an immersive exploration into the visual language and symbolic meanings of angelic figures in miniature painting. Guided by Professor Filiz Adıgüzel, Participants will navigate both the technical and creative processes of depicting celestial beings within the traditions of miniature art, whose mastery of classical techniques is enriched by a distinctive contemporary touch.
Angels have long held a revered place in Islamic art—particularly in illuminated manuscripts—where they often symbolize purity, protection, and divine presence. Participants will investigate the cultural, spiritual, and aesthetic dimensions of angelic imagery, with a focus on balanced stylistic composition and harmonious integration within the visual scene.
Throughout the course, students will master techniques for rendering symmetrical wings with fine detail, intricate drapery folds, and ethereal gestures, employing methods such as التحرير tahrir (fine outlining) layered application of vibrant colours,andand tonal blendingThe use of gold,pastel accents, and rhythmic brushstrokes will also be encouraged to enhance the radiance and the spiritual aura of each figure.
Beyond replicating classical forms, participants will be encouraged to develop their own personal interpretations of angelic beings, blending historical influences with contemporary creativity. By the end of the week, each participant will have produced a polished miniature painting that embodies both technical mastery and poetic resonance.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, participants will have developed both the technical and conceptual skills needed to depict angelic figures within the aesthetic and symbolic framework of miniature painting. Students will: Draw accurate anatomical proportions, complex wing structures, and flowing garments. Apply fine tahrir outlines and multi-layered coloring techniques to achieve harmony and expressiveness.
Gain confidence in incorporating classical stylistic features into their own original works. Reflect on the cultural and spiritual meanings embedded in angelic imagery, informed by illuminated manuscripts and historical visual narratives. Produce an original, refined work that balances symbolism, historical reference, and technical precision, bringing angelic forms into contemporary artistic practice.

Instructor Biography: Professor Filiz Adıgüzel:
Professor Filiz Adıgüzel is a faculty member at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Dokuz Eylül University (Izmir, Turkey), where she serves as Head of the Department of Turkish Traditional Arts. She is recognised as both a distinguished artist specialising in miniature painting and a leading academic who skillfully bridges classical Ottoman miniature techniques with modern approaches.
Her work draws inspiration from nature—particularly trees and plants—imbued with symbolic richness and intricate detail. Since 2018, she has collaborated with contemporary artist Halil Altındere on bold miniature reinterpretations that engage with historical narratives to address contemporary political and social issues.
Professor Adıgüzel’s work has been exhibited in numerous national and international exhibitions. In her teaching, she emphasizes precise brushwork, layered colors, and the symbolic dimensions of visual storytelling, guiding her students toward immersive artistic experiences that balance technical mastery with poetic interpretation.
