Fundamentals of Diwani Calligraphy – First Semester

About Diwani Script

Diwani script is one of the Ottoman-origin styles of Arabic calligraphy, which flourished and spread widely from its inception until today. Inspired by the Riqʿa script—the official script used for administrative transactions in the Ottoman Empire—Diwani was later considered equally prestigious. It was named Diwani after the “Ottoman Sultan’s Diwan,” the administrative bureau where royal correspondence was written in this style.

This course includes a live demonstration of writing in Diwani script, giving participants the opportunity to observe the precise execution of the script. Historical references and examples will also be presented, showcasing how renowned calligraphers approached this artistic style.

What makes Diwani script especially captivating is the fluidity and softness of its letters, which flow with elegance and feature circular, overlapping forms. Some letters may appear similar despite their differences—for instance, alif (ا) and lam (ل) at the beginning of words.

Calligraphers often innovate by connecting otherwise separate letters—such as ra (ر), waw (و), alif (ا), and dal (د)—with the letters that follow, adding further harmony and beauty to the script. At times, letters may even deviate from strict rules, but such exceptions do not diminish the elegance of the script; instead, they contribute to its charm and artistic innovation.
