By participating in this botanical watercolour workshop, students will develop the fundamental skills required to create realistic nature studies.
Participants will learn how to apply essential watercolour painting techniques, including washes, glazing, layering, and dry brush methods, to produce detailed botanical illustrations. The course will help students improve their colour mixing skills, allowing them to create vibrant and natural fruit colours through careful observation and layering.
Students will also learn how to represent three-dimensional form and surface texture by understanding light, shadow, and tonal values. Special attention will be given to identifying highlights, reflected light, and cast shadows to create depth and realism. In addition, participants will gain practical knowledge about selecting appropriate paints, brushes, and paper for botanical watercolour work, enabling them to continue developing their artistic practice beyond the workshop.
By the end of this workshop, participants will have developed greater confidence in painting realistic botanical subjects using watercolour. They will understand how to build colour gradually through layering, control tonal values, and apply techniques such as glazing and dry brush to create detailed and vibrant fruit studies.

Shevaun Doherty is an award-winning botanical artist from Ireland, specialising in watercolour painting on paper and vellum. Her work is distinguished by its remarkable ability to capture the beauty of nature with extraordinary precision, combining careful scientific observation with artistic expression.
Shevaun has designed four sets of Flora and Fauna postage stamps for Ireland, and her work has been exhibited at the National Gallery of Ireland. She is internationally recognised for her contribution to the development and promotion of botanical art.
She currently teaches at the School of Calligraphy and Ornamentation, where she shares her expertise and passion for painting and nature with her students, encouraging them to develop their artistic skills and discover the beauty of the natural world through art.
