As part of the cultural visits programme, Dr. Esra Alhamel, Director of the School of Calligraphy and Ornamentation, visited Beit Jameel for Traditional Arts in the historic district of Fustat, Cairo, to explore the centre’s approach to traditional art and craft education. Located in an archaeological area in Fustat, Beit Jameel offers a two-year educational programme that admits approximately 25 students each year, selected according to specific criteria. The programme focuses on continuous practical training across several disciplines, including wood carving, ceramics, metalwork, and traditional ornamentation.

The teaching methodology is designed to ensure that students understand every stage of the craft process, beginning with the preparation of materials and tools, progressing through the learning of fundamental techniques, and culminating in the production of complete works. The programme places strong emphasis on attention to detail, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the artistic process rather than focusing solely on the final outcome.

The visit also included a tour of the ceramics department, which is taught within part of the Fustat Ceramics Centre. Students work in a training environment that reflects the traditional workshop model, supported by structured academic supervision.

This visit highlights the importance of specialised programmes in systematically transmitting craft knowledge and underscores the role of educational institutions in sustaining traditional arts.
