Dr. Reda Farag will present two workshops to take participants deeper into the world of Islamic manuscripts and restoration techniques, with a focus on the artistic and technical standards that have characterized manuscript construction over hundreds of years.
Through these workshops, participants will learn about the history of book formation, methods of parchment production and preparation, and the arts of binding and illumination, with practical exercises that will help them recapture the skills used by ancient craftsmen.
Workshop1 Technical and Practical Standards for Building the Manuscript Structure of the Qur'an
The workshop covers the history of manuscript book construction, starting with ancient scrolls (papyrus and parchment) and continuing through the emergence of the codex (a book with a cover and pages).
It also focuses on the development of Qur'anic manuscripts in terms of construction, sewing, and binding, as well as the artistic features that have made the Holy Qur'an unique in form and precision over the ages.

This workshop will review parchment as one of the most important materials used in the past in the manufacture of books and manuscripts.
Participants will learn about the methods of preparing, drying, and stretching leather to become a suitable surface for writing or drawing, while studying the characteristics of parchment and its advantages compared to paper.
Participants will also gain practical training in reproducing parchment according to ancient methods, exploring how to Employment in Writing, Binding, and Illumination

Dr. Reda Farag Ismail Mohamed is a senior researcher in the restoration of antiquities and manuscripts from Egypt. He began his career in the restoration of paper collections at the Egyptian National Library in 2003. He then obtained a master's degree with distinction in manuscript restoration in Rome in 2007, followed by a doctorate with distinction in Paris in 2015. He has participated in the establishment and development of numerous restoration centres in Egypt and several Arab countries, such as Lebanon, Algeria, and Mauritania. He has also conducted specialised courses in the restoration and binding of manuscripts and contributed to the establishment of museums for manuscript heritage. He is known for his extensive experience in reviving ancient restoration techniques and transferring them to the new generation of researchers.
