Drawing Inspired by the Emirati Environment
The Fujairah School of Calligraphy and Ornamentation, in collaboration with the Life Schools Project under the Dubai Public Libraries Department at the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, held an exceptional training workshop on 21 December 2025. During this distinctive artistic workshop, participants learned how to draw and color natural elements with realistic precision, inspired by plants found in the United Arab Emirates. The workshop offered a rich educational experience based on careful observation and drawing using specialized artistic tools.
The workshop was built around six key artistic elements: line, shadow, form, color, texture, and composition, enabling participants to master the art of natural drawing. Attendees were trained to observe the fine details of nature through a gradual process, beginning with simple preliminary studies and progressing toward producing complete artistic paintings. Artist Shafeon provided live explanations and personalized individual support for each participant, drawing on her extensive teaching experience to ensure everyone benefited fully.
The workshop used specialized educational materials, including an open handbook titled “Natural and Botanical Drawing Course”, featuring explanatory texts and detailed illustrations of elements from the Emirati environment, such as dates. Participants were provided with a variety of color palettes and professional drawing tools, including pencils and different types of brushes, allowing them a comprehensive hands-on experience in natural drawing.
The workshop aimed to train participants to observe nature’s fine details with accuracy, progressing from simple early studies to producing complete artistic works that reflect the beauty of the Emirati environment.
The workshop witnessed active participation from attendees who fully engaged in applying the acquired skills immediately. Special focus was placed on drawing and coloring local elements such as dates, where participants learned how to blend colors and use brushes precisely to create realistic artworks that closely resemble nature.The workshop was characterized by an interactive educational atmosphere, in which participants worked with concentration to master drawing and coloring techniques, paying close attention to fine details such as shadows and texture. Artist Shafeon used modern teaching methods that combined theoretical explanation with practical application, giving participants the opportunity to develop their artistic skills in a supportive and motivating environment. This workshop reflects the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority’s commitment to promoting visual arts and preserving Emirati cultural heritage through high-quality educational programs that connect art with the local environment.
