Glass Gilding – (April – May)

In recent years, glass gilding has enjoyed a global resurgence. Signwriters, artists, and furniture restorers have been bringing this skill to the forefront.
This course will explore the potentials of glass gilding and its incorporation into modern work. Students will be encouraged to explore using the medium of leaf on glass to develop their practice. As well as being taught how to create mirrors using silver leaf, students will also learn how to draw onto the surface with silver and gold leaf. An exploration will be made into creating antique style mirrors, writing script and creating artistic finishes into mirrors and gilded glass.
This course is ideal for anyone who wants to explore the potential of this craft in their own practice.

Learning Objectives:

  • How to prepare glass for gilding.
  • How to apply goldleaf and other metals to the surface of glass using water and adhesive.
  • How to apply different decorative effects to the gilded surface, including bending colors, antiquing mirrors, using chemicals, drawing into the surface.
  • How to use templates and masks to create script and other decorative effects on the surface.

Learning Outcomes:

The student will produce a piece of decorative gilded glass in a finish of their choice, alongside a panel upon which many experiments will be conducted, in order to understand some the techniques available.

The student will have confidence in developing a project from scratch, planning the process and finish the piece to a good standard.

The student will understand the different metals that can be used and experience different ways of applying the metals to the surface.

An understanding of backing up the gilded glass will be obtained.

  • Please note that you should attend at least 90% of the hours to receive your attendance certificate for this course.

Tutor’s Biography: Richard Walker

 

Richard has worked on a wide range of gilding projects including historic ships (HMS Warrior), private interiors, antique furniture for castles and listed monuments. He teaches at a wide range of top colleges, including West Dean College of Arts and Conservation and The Chippendale International School of Furniture. He specializes working with artists and creatives in developing their work using goldleaf and other precious metals.
