01 Bookbinding Basics | 22-25 Jul

Over four sessions you will be introduced to the basic tools, materials and techniques involved in traditional bookbinding.

Starting with simple folded structures and finishing with a multi-section sewn book with a hard cover, this course will equip you with the skills to start your own little book projects and move on to more complex bookbinding classes in the future.

Learning Objectives: 

• Create a range of folded books
• Sew a single section book with soft cover
• Sew a multi-section book with a cloth covered hard cover

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course you will be able to:

• name and apply a range of bookbinding specific hand tools and materials
• understand the importance of grain direction in paper and card
• measure and calculate materials accurately
• create a range of folded and sewn book structures

show a solid foundation from which to consolidate and move on to more complex projects

Tutor: Ina Baumeister

Ina is a professional bookbinder and box-maker. She holds an MA in Book Art from UAL Camberwell and a master-craftsmanship from the German Crafts Council and Guild of Bookbinders in Munich. As a binder she works with contemporary arts organisation Book Works, the Tate Paper and Photography conservation department as well as other organisations and clients.
