تقدم هذه الدورة مدخلًا عمليًا متدرجًا إلى عالم الزخرفة النباتية والتذهيب في الفنون الإسلامية، وتجمع بين المعرفة التاريخية، ومبادئ التصميم، والمهارات الفنية، والتطبيق العملي.

يتعرف المشاركون على خصائص الزخرفة النباتية الإسلامية، وكيفية تبسيط الأشكال المستوحاة من الطبيعة وتحويلها إلى وحدات زخرفية قابلة للتكوين والتناظر والتكرار. كما يتدربون على رسم العناصر النباتية الأساسية، مثل الأوراق والأزهار والمسارات الحلزونية، وبناء تكوينات زخرفية دقيقة ومتوازنة.

تشمل الدورة أيضًا التعريف بالأدوات والخامات المستخدمة في التذهيب، وإعداد سطح العمل، واستخدام الذهب المائي وتطبيقه بالفرشاة، إلى جانب أساسيات التلوين واختيار الألوان المنسجمة مع الذهب.

Course Description

This course offers an advanced programme in the design and execution of Qur'an frontispiece illumination, by delving into gilding and floral ornamentation techniques and applying them within an integrated composition inspired by the traditions of Qur'an and Islamic manuscript ornamentation.

The course builds on the foundational skills acquired in the introductory levels, taking participants into a more detailed study of constructing decorative composition, organising spaces, and achieving symmetry, precision, and visual rhythm. They will also learn about the characteristics of Quran opening decoration (sadr al-mushaf) and its essential elements, as well as how to distribute motifs to achieve balance between the central space, the frame, floral elements, and gold.

Each participant works on developing their own design, starting with the study of historical models and the analysis of their compositions, through preliminary studies and the construction of the final design, up to transferring it to the working surface and applying water gilding and colours.

The course concludes with a comprehensive project in which each participant designs and executes an ornamentation for the opening pages of a Qur'an, combining technical precision, balanced composition, aesthetic awareness, and respect for the artistic traditions of Qur'anic illumination.

Prerequisites

Prior knowledge of the basics of decorative painting and gilding, or completion of a course Introduction to the fundamentals of gilding and botanical ornamentation or equivalent.

Objectives

• A study of the characteristics of Quranic illumination and the traditions of decorating the frontispiece pages of the Quran.
• Analysis of historical models to understand the compositional structure and decorative elements used in them.
• Developing advanced decorative configurations based on symmetry, balance, and visual rhythm.
• Understanding the relationship between the central area, the frame, and the botanical and decorative elements.
• Developing the botanical elements with a higher level of accuracy and detail.
• Designing composite decorative units and employing them within an integrated composition.
• Applying the principles of symmetry and accurately transferring the design to the implementation surface.
• Studying the relationship between gold and colours and selecting a suitable colour palette for the nature of the work.
• Organising the stages of work execution, from the preliminary study to the final finishing.
• Transforming the historical study and initial concept into a balanced decorative design.

Outputs

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Analysis of selected specimens of Qur'an ornamentation and understanding the foundations of their composition.

About the Teacher

Haya Obaid Al Ketbi is an Emirati artist with a Bachelor’s degree in Education, specialising in fine and decorative art practice. She offers practical training focused on developing botanical elements, building advanced decorative compositions, painting, and manual gilding, guiding participants through all stages of the work, from the study of historical models and design preparation to the execution of the final project.

Course Description

A series of seven practical sessions providing a focused introduction to the art of Indian miniatures and its traditional techniques. The sessions focus on three core themes: ink drawing and shading, painting trees in the Pahari style, and painting lotus flowers and their leaves.

Participants practise using fine brushes, controlling line quality, applying primary colours, planning, building up tonal values using the pardaz technique, and executing fine details. Some subjects are repeated on different dates to provide more than one registration opportunity and to enable participants in the full package to develop their skills through repeated practice.

You can attend a single session independently, or register for all seven sessions to get a broader practical experience and develop a higher level of accuracy and brush control.

Dr Susana Marin is an artist, researcher and educator specialising in Pahari painting and Indian miniatures. She trained in India under a number of traditional artists, including Padma Shri Vijay Sharma and Manish Soni. She holds a PhD from the Prince's Foundation School of Traditional Arts in London, and works as a teacher of Indian painting and a PhD supervisor. She also delivers international workshops, and her work has been exhibited in the United States, Europe and the Indian subcontinent.

Course Description

An intensive seven-week interconnected programme in the art of Indian miniatures, introducing participants to the materials, methods, and painting techniques historically used in Mughal and Pahari painting. The programme progresses from training in ink drawing and line quality, to preparing Wasli paper and natural pigments, applying colours, and shading using the pardaz technique, culminating in the execution of fine details and the completion of a fully realised miniature painting.

Each week focuses on an independent topic, including ink drawing, material and colour preparation, floral designs, trees, birds, and faces, culminating in the design and execution of a miniature painting by the participant. Registration is available for a single week independently, while those enrolled in the full programme benefit from a progressive pathway combining techniques and skills to develop an integrated artwork under the instructor's supervision.
