(TezhipI) Turkish Ilumanation Art – (Apr – Jun)

About Turkish Illumination Art (TezhipI): This course introduces students to the fundamental principles, techniques, and applications of traditional Turkish decorative arts, emphasizing both historical context and hands-on practice. Students will explore a rich variety of motifs, patterns, and coloring styles that have been passed down through centuries, focusing particularly on the intricate Hatâyî group motifs, the delicate and subtle halkâr painting technique, the rhythmic structure of zencerek designs, and the precise methods of thread-based pattern creation. Through lectures, demonstrations, and studio work, students will analyze the symbolic meanings and cultural significance behind these traditional forms while also learning how to apply them using contemporary tools and materials. By engaging with sources and reproducing classical examples, students will gain a deeper appreciation for the art of Turkish illumination and ornamentation. Over the semester, they will progressively build their skills in composition, color harmony, and brush control, ultimately developing a strong foundation in design principles. By the end of the course, students will be equipped not only with practical and technical abilities but also with the confidence and insight needed to thoughtfully create and color original works inspired by traditional Turkish decorative arts.
